Team BEEF SD 14 year-old Runs First Half Marathon

Fourteen year-old and Team BEEF South Dakota member, Madilyn Wulf, recently completed her first 13.1-mile race in the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Marathon/half-marathon! Madilyn has been a member of Team BEEF South Dakota, a community of runners and cyclists who recognize the nutritional benefits of beef and the vital role high-quality protein plays in their training, since 2014 and henceforth developed a love for running. During that time, she has run several kids 1K’s, which eventually turned into running 5K races.

Madilyn completed her first 10K race in August of 2019 and decided to make the leap for the half-marathoner this year. She was one of only ten 14-year-olds that competed in the Deadwood Mickelson Trail Half Marathon, a race with only 60 runners out of 1,934 that were 19 years of age or younger. Madilyn averaged under 10 minutes per mile for all 13 miles.

She is an all-season athlete at her school participating in Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, and Track. She participated in the state Cross Country meet in Rapid City in October of 2020 and the State Track meet in Rapid city as a member of the 4 x 400-meter relay team in May of 2021.

When asked if she plans to do any more half-marathons, Madilyn says, “Well not tomorrow, but I think that I would like to try again next year and see if I can beat my time!”

Madilyn runs for Team BEEF SD in her bright red Team Beef jersey, promoting beef and showcasing eating beef as part of a healthful lifestyle.

When she isn’t off running the trail or track, she enjoys being home and working on the family ranch alongside her brother and dad. She actively participates in all activities on the ranch from branding calves to helping with the hay crop. As a future leader of the beef industry, Madilyn also takes part in South Dakota Junior Beef Ambassador program that gives South Dakota youth the opportunity to promote beef and share their beef story.

Both programs are funded by the Southag Dakota Beef Industry Council and the Beef Checkoff. For more information on Team BEEF SD or the SD Junior Beef Ambassador Program visit sdbeef.org.
