Know Your Ranchers - DeJong Ranch
Updated: May 10, 2021
This week’s Know Your Rancher blog takes us to the White River Hills in South Central South Dakota where the DeJong Ranch is running a diversified operation with family in mind. They know it takes an army to raise a quality beef product and that’s just what they are doing. Follow along as we learn more about the DeJong ranch and their commitment to bringing a high-quality protein to consumer’s table.
1. Ranch Name & Family Members Involved?
Our family owns and operates the DeJong Ranch. Our operation consists of Miles & Kim DeJong, Kevin & Katrin Van Zandbergen and Children Kylee (9), Kelli (7) and Cooper (4) along with Wyatt & Zana DeJong
2. Segment of the Beef community?
Our family operates many segments of a beef operation including the Cow Calf, Annual Bull Sale (First Thursday in March at Kimball Livestock Exchange) and raising replacement heifers- we always have bred heifers for sale.
3. Where is your ranch located?
We are located 15 Miles South of Kennebec SD, right along the beautiful White River hills.
4. How long have you ranched?
Buddy & Leo started the ranch we are on in 1948. After Buddy passed in 1990 Kim and Miles took over the ranch. In 2010 Kevin and Katrin moved back and later this month Wyatt and Zana will be moving home to help with operations of the ranch.
5. Tell us a little bit about yourself, your family and about your ranch?
We are very family oriented and always teaching, whether it is Kim & Katrin homeschooling the kids, inviting guest to the ranch, and showing them how and why we work cattle, Miles teaching many people how to ride horse, Wyatt & Zana teaching youth about showing cattle and Kevin’s experience feeding cattle and improving the crops, there is so much our consumers do not know. The best part about our ranch is the patience we have with those learning and working together every day to keep making improvements to our operation. This operation is truly family based and our main goal is to bring consumers the highest quality protein we possibly can through our commitment to caring for our land and animals in the most sustainable way we know how.
6. What do you want consumers to know about the Beef industry?
The Beef product is a very nutrient rich product with so many different cuts to choose from. Not only do cattle produce meat, but we use the whole beef for many other useful by products that we use on an everyday basis. We encourage you to ask questions about beef and why we believe this is a great protein for your everyday lifestyle.
7. One word to describe your life as a rancher and why?
Stewardship, we work hard to take care of God’s land and animals to help put food on others table and produce our favorite protein, BEEF.
8. Favorite Beef Dish?
Beef Farmers and Rancher such as the DeJong’s work tirelessly to bring a beef product to the table that is nutrient rich and wholesome for all consumers. Through remarkable stewardship, education, faith, and family the DeJong’s are South Dakota Beef Producers that are committed to providing the best beef product possible. Follow along the rest of May Beef Month as we highlight several South Dakota Beef Farmers and Rancher.
